The workshop is free to attend and exclusive to local authorities and UK water companies. It is aimed at those who are interested in making better use of customer debtor data to help combat the increasing debt problem. The format is, as usual, designed to encourage discussion and debate.

The agenda is as follows:

  • Data sharing, data collection and data use – missing opportunities?
    • The ICO view: the data you can collect, how you can use it and what can be shared with whom (Dave Evans, Senior Data Protection Manager, Information Commissioner’s Office)
    • Legal view, in practice; what can be done, has been done and how to properly understand the DPA (Geraldine Swanton, DPA specialist, Martineau)
    • Interactive session: how to get more from data

  • Sector benchmarking; Overview of research key findings
    • Would local government style ‘hierarchy of owners’ legislation really help water bill collection; and, what can each sector learn about effective enforcement of their full mandate? (Presentation by Echo)

  • Identifying new trends in debtor behaviour
    • Live examples: currently observed movement and changes derived from behavioural data (Presentation by Echo)
    • Interactive session: what is best practice and how can it increase the priority of our bills?

Registration will be at 10am, we aim to start by 10:30am and finish by 4:30pm. Lunch and refreshments are included.

The workshop is to be held at the offices of the law firm Martineau:
No1 Colmore Square, Birmingham, B4 6AA.

What will you get out of it?:
  • Hear the ICO explode the myths about what you can actually do
  • Obtain legal advice from Martineau about data use scenarios
  • Gain insight into current debtor trends from live data
  • Take away practical debt collection advice to apply in your organisation
  • Benchmark your approach against others in water and local authority sectors
  • Share experience, ideas and opinions with industry peers

To ensure an effective discussion, the maximum number of participants will be 25 and spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
